EGYPT 98-Esna and Edfu

After visiting the major sights of Luxor, we sailed up the Nile towards Aswan. We visited three ancient temples along the Nile, Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo.

The town of Esna stands on the site of ancient Latopolis. Only parts of the temple of Khnum, with an almost intact hupostyle hall, still stand. The temple is a latter reconstruction of an 18th dynasty temple. The next three photos shows details of the wall reliefs of the temple.

Details of the tetralobed capitals inside the hypostyle hall, composed of various sculptural floral motives. A fine example of the exquisite elegance achieved by Egyptian artists of the later centuries in the field of decoration.

Further upstream we visited the Horus temple in Edfu. It is the best preserved temple in all of Egypt.

The Great Pylon of the temple. On the walls are adoration of the gods and large figures of Horus and Hathor. The tall portal is flanked by two falcons in black granite.

The majestic black granite statue of the falcon god Horus in front of the Hypostyle Hall, wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt.
