The gate to the Yangxin Palace (Hall of Mental Cultivation). This is a typical structure of the gates to the smaller quarters of the Forbidden Palace.

The Yangxin Palace. From Emperor Yongzheng (the third emperor of the Qing dynasty) onwards the emperor lived here instead of the Qianqing Palace.

The throne in the main hall of the Yangxin Palace. This is where the Emperor conducts his daily business.

The door leading from the main hall to the side chambers.

The next three photos show the typical courtyards in the living quarters. There are six main courtyards on each side on both sides of three main palaces. These are where the emperor's concubines lived. Notice that the buildings in the livings quarters looks quite old, compare to the buildings in front which have been refurbished recently for the Beijing Olympics.
