Without its treasures, the Palace Museum is just a souless shell. However, almost all the treasures of the Forbidden city are no longer here. They are either in the Taipei Palace Museum or scattered all over the world, either in museums or with private collectors. Most of the treasures currently in the Forbidden City were amassed by the Chinese government from private collectors and other sources after 1949.
