Today is the first day of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. From Pokhara, it is a one hour drive to Nayapooi and then about an hour's trek to Birethani, the entrance of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), where one pays a small fee to get a permit to enter the Annapurna region.

Golden morning sun over Machhapuchhre (6,993m), which means "fish tail" in Nepali. However, it looks more like the Matterhorn (i.e. pyramid shape peak) from this angle.

Sunrise over the Annapurna Himal Massif as viewed from Pokhara. The peaks from left to right are Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV and Annapurna II. Machhapuchhre is actually the lowest mountain in the Massif, but appears to be the highest as it is the closest to Pokhara.

The Annapurna Himal Massif in the early morning, just before we left Pokhara for the trek. The faint white patch on the left of the photograph is Dhaulagiri, the 7th highest peak in the world at 8,167m, but appears much lower here as it is much further from Pokhara.

View of Nayapooi from the roadside. All vehicles stop by the roadside for trekkers to alight and then it is short descent down to the valley to start the trek.

The first of the many suspension bridges we will cross along the trek.

First view of the Modi Khola, which will accompany us throughout the trek. It is a stream that flows from the Annapurna Sanctuary. The Modi Khola valley is between Annapurna 1, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli in the west and Machhapuchhre in the east

Birethani, where we got our permits and "officially" started our trek.
